Before You Change What You Do, Notice How You Think
Why self-awareness is an important part of intentional leadership
When something isn’t working, our natural response is often to focus on action.
What should I do differently? What needs to change? What should I say? What’s the next step?
Those can all be useful questions. But sometimes, before changing what we do, there is another question worth asking:
What is shaping the way I’m thinking about this situation?
The way we interpret an experience can influence the way we respond to it. Our assumptions, expectations, past experiences, self-doubt, perfectionism, fear of judgment, and limiting beliefs can quietly shape our decisions and behaviors.
For leaders, becoming aware of those patterns matters. Because intentional leadership doesn’t begin only with what we do. It also begins with understanding what is influencing us before we act.
Self-Awareness Creates Space for Choice
Imagine receiving difficult feedback. One person might hear: There’s something I can learn here. Another might immediately think: I’m not good enough. Someone else may interpret the same conversation as: They don’t trust me.
The situation may be similar, but the internal interpretation is different. That interpretation can influence what happens next.
Self-awareness gives us an opportunity to notice what is happening internally before automatically reacting externally. It creates a small but important space between what happens and how we choose to respond. That space is where intentional leadership can begin.
What Might Be Influencing the Way You Lead?
Our thinking doesn't develop in isolation. We bring our experiences with us.
Past experiences, assumptions, expectations, self-doubt, perfectionism, fear of judgment, and limiting beliefs can all influence how we interpret a situation.
The goal isn't to eliminate every uncomfortable thought. It is to become more aware of which thoughts are influencing our behavior.
Self-Awareness Is Part of Leadership Development
Leadership development often focuses on communication, decision-making, delegation, conflict management, and strategic thinking. Those skills matter. But developing the person using those skills matters, too.
This is why people development can go deeper than teaching someone what to do. It can also help people understand themselves well enough to recognize why they respond the way they do.
Leadership development doesn't have to begin after someone receives a management title. Organizations can create opportunities for people to strengthen self-awareness, confidence, communication, perspective, and intentional decision-making long before their next promotion.
A Simple Reflection Before You Respond
The next time you find yourself reacting strongly to a situation, facing a difficult decision, or avoiding a conversation, try slowing the process down.
Ask yourself:
- What am I thinking about this situation?
- What do I know to be true and what am I assuming?
- If I approached this with greater intention, what might I do differently?
The purpose isn't to overanalyze every decision. It's to create enough awareness to recognize when an old assumption, fear, expectation, or belief may be making the decision for you.
Develop the Person Behind the Leader
Organizations need capable leaders. But leadership development isn't simply about adding more skills, responsibilities, or tools.
It is also about helping people understand how they think, communicate, respond, and make decisions.
Because when people become more aware of what is happening within them, they have a greater opportunity to become intentional about what happens next.
Before asking, “What do I need to do differently?” consider starting one step earlier: “What might be shaping the way I’m thinking?”
A Question for People Leaders
How is your organization helping emerging leaders develop self-awareness alongside their leadership skills?
Leadership growth begins with awareness. Before changing what you do, take a moment to understand what is shaping how you think.
